MY STORY

JAMES BLACKSHAW

I played sport from a very early age and was signed to a professional football team at the age of 8. When I was in my late teens i got a back injury and had to stop playing. It was here that I became interested in how to rehabilitate the body through exercise.

I teach my students how to properly use their bodies to enhance their lives and well-being. My approach to health and fitness is to first assess any mobility issues. From there I prescribe a comprehensive programme to ensure each student of mine becomes stronger,  more agile and able to live a long healthy life.

Those who I teach are not called "clients." They are my students, my friends, and a member of the LDN Motion family. I treat everyone that I train with patience, respect and compassion and I enjoy helping them to embrace change.

Training

TRAINING

I work with people of all abilities and ages in South Devon. Whether you're an athlete looking to compete or someone who needs to work on balance and coordination. Let me help you transform your body, advance your fitness and support your body in moving as it was designed to - with fluidity and ease. All in the comfort of your own home or in the great outdoors. Combining your training programme with mobility and flexibility will help you craft a body that is toned and strong, but also supple. Sessions are fun and varied, challenging yet supportive; helping you to become the best version of yourself.

MOBILITY

Mobility is the joint’s ability to move fluidly with stability through a certain range of movement. The more mobility you have, the better you will move when performing different movements. ‘Mobilising’ should refer to getting a joint moving better, rather than a muscle, as our joints hold up to 50% of our flexibility.

The aim is to restore mobility – that is, the raw range of motion that modern life, desk work and commuting rob from us daily. Classic exercises alone can’t fix this, which is why foam rollers and recovery balls are just as important often as kettlebells and dumbbells.

STRENGTH

Building and maintaining muscle is necessary for all of us, especially as we age. And the earlier we start, the better.

Most adults lose nearly a half pound of muscle per year starting around age 30, mostly because they aren’t as active as they were when they were younger. Losing muscle at the same time that metabolism starts to slow down is a recipe for weight gain and the health issues that can accompany it.

Building stronger muscles isn’t just about vanity, either. Strength training not only helps with weight control in terms of boosting your metabolism, but increases bone density, reduces blood pressure and improves stability.

FLEXIBILTY

Flexibility can be termed as the ability of your joints and body parts to execute their full range of motion. Flexibility is required in all your day-to-day activities such as bending, walking, lifting, etc. Being flexible allows your muscles to remain mobile. But, like most things, flexibility decreases with age and it is very important to include flexibility exercises in your daily workout.

One of the key reasons that muscles lose their natural suppleness and flexibility and can become prone to tears, aches, and pains is being inactive. If its not remedied in time, loss of flexibility could lead to permanent changes.

Physiotherapy

bodywork

Massage therapy is an excellent way to relieve tension and restore wellness. I offer this alongside PT sessions or as stand alone treatments.

I am qualified in Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy, and tend to use a mix of therapies to get the required results. I am also qualified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Being a mobile therapist enables you to feel relaxed in the comfort of your own home whilst getting all the benefits of a massage without the hassle of travelling to a clinic.

reviews

James is a personal trainer I can highly recommend. I came to him with a pre-existing knee injury - he curated a program that strengthened it and has introduced me to an expanded range of motion & movement. The sessions have noticeably raised my level of fitness and have given me a new lease of life in my other sporting activities. He has excellent conduct and always goes above and beyond, offering great nutritional advice. He is suitably tough enough without being oppressive. My energy levels are at a whole new level

I've been training with PTs for about 12 years and over that time I've had many, given the transient nature of many. James is by far the best I've had. He's professional, reliable and always on-time. He's knowledgeable about the body and careful, so much so I arranged for him to start training my 72 year old mother (she loves his session too). He prepares and researches to stay on top of his game, making sessions relevant to you, your aims and your progress. Using this, he constructs interesting programs that condition your whole body combining HIIT, calisthenics, yoga and more techniques as appropriate, you just need to follow his instructions and the results soon show and you feel great (well I did). The way he explains each task keeps you sharp and able to pick up new concepts quickly. If you start using James, you won't stop. He'll be your best kept secret. I highly recommend him

James has been helping me regain strength and mobility in my shoulder after breaking it in a bike accident. We've had fantastic results and are now working on core fitness, balance, co-ordination and overall fitness. James' perception, tact and good humour make the sessions thoroughly enjoyable. I cant recommend him enough

JENNY

South LDN

I came to James as a blank canvas having never really worked out before. After a matter of just a few months, I have noticed a massive improvement in my strength and wellbeing. The sessions are tough and varied but always good fun and just when you think you’re struggling with that last rep James is always there to offer advice and the much needed motivation to get you through
